Looking Beyond the Pandemic | Chris Tate

July 2020

2020 has been a challenging year for everyone so far due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s seen changes we could not have foreseen, but if there are any positives at all to be taken from it, it’s the acceleration of the transition to home working, and I believe that this will be beneficial for both employee productivity and the environment.

This is where MSPs have stepped up, helping huge amounts of office-based workers work from home. It was an enormous task, but it's one that MSPs have risen to, despite also having to deal with all the restrictions and sending their own staff home to work too.

Enabling people to work from home is only half of the battle of course. Another key thing is to ensure that they are secure while they are doing it.

Security takes many forms, but in the MYKI corner of the world, it’s mainly around password and identity management. Again, MSPs embraced this and have been deploying MYKI to their clients rapidly.

In addition to helping keep everyone secure, it has also helped some companies manage their furloughed employees by blocking access to certain applications, and helped others stay even more secure by geo-locating access to applications based on a user's home address. All of this on top of providing them a secure way to store and manage passwords and two-factor authentication.

When we look back at the lessons learned from this pandemic, I hope we will reflect on how quickly we, as an industry, were able to do things that could have taken years to do before.

We helped the workforce of the world stay at home and stay safe, and in turn helped flatten the curve.

Who knows what the future will bring? I predict that people will begin to return to their offices in time, but something has changed for good, and in my opinion, for the better.

Employers know that productivity isn’t decreased when workers are at home. In fact, there is evidence to show the opposite.

Employees are happier, as less time commuting to and from the office and more time at home is really showing them how work can be in the future.

Therefore, I think we will end up with a hybrid approach combining working from home and working in the office. This will allow for more flexible working and make happier staff, while reducing congestion and pollution too, so it’s a real positive.

One thing is certain though: people will expect secure access to their business applications wherever they work from and that is where the MSPs will continue to add value to their clients.
