How to Set Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on Your Fortnite Account (and Avoid Getting Hacked Like Drake)

Update: rapper Drake's Fortnite account got hijacked by a hacker during a recent charity livestream. A good reminder for all you Fortnite players out there to set up 2FA and protect your accounts.

Fortnite developer Epic Games has announced that it will offer players the Boogie Down emote for free if they activate two-factor authentication on their Epic Games accounts.

This is a great way to incentivise users to increase the security of their accounts in order to prevent hacks.

In this blog post we will briefly explain what two-factor authentication is and how to set it up in order to receive the free emote.

What is two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication or 2FA is a way to add a second layer of authentication to your accounts.

We usually rely on passwords to log into different services, such as our Epic Games account, but that is not enough, as passwords can be stolen or guessed by hackers.

The main reason for that is the fact that we tend to use the same passwords, or weak variations of the same passwords, across the board.

This is where two-factor authentication comes in.

When two-factor authentication is enabled, you will not only be asked to enter your password, but also do one of the following:

  • Enter a 6 digit code that you receive through an authenticator app or by SMS. This code changes roughly every 30 seconds.
  • Provide biometric data, such as your fingerprint or Face ID
  • Insert a FiDO 2UF USB stick into your computer

In the case of Fortnite, Epic games supports two-factor authentication based on 6 digit tokens.

How to setup Two-Factor Authentication

The Myki Password Manager & Authenticator is a great two-factor authentication authenticator, as it allows you to not only store your 2FA tokens, but also store passwords, cards, notes and IDs.

What's even better is the fact that Myki keeps your sensitive data stored offline on your own device, not in cloud servers. With Myki, you are in control of your own data.

Now, all you need to do to set up two-factor authentication on your Epic Games account is follow these steps:

Step 1: Download the Myki Password Manager & Authenticator

Visit the Itunes Store, if you are on iOS, or the Play Store, if you are on Android, to download Myki. Or visit the Download page on the Myki website.

After doing that, set up Myki by following the Getting Started process in the app.

Step 2 Setup 2FA on Epic Games

  • First, log into your Epic Games account by visiting this link.

This link will take you to the "Password & Security" section of your account page. If you aren't, click on your account name in the top right corner > "Account".

  • Click on the "Enable Authenticator App" button. This will open a popup dialog that contains a QR code.

  • In the Myki app, click on the "+" icon in the top right corner, and click on "2FA". This will open the page to set up your Epic Games 2FA.

  • Give the account a nickname and click on the QR code icon to scan the QR code. After you've done that, hit "Save".

  • You will see the 6 digit code in the Myki app under the 2FA section. Type the code in the input field on the Epic Games website and select "Activate".

And you're done! You've successfully set up 2FA and have just unlocked a free emote!

From now on, whenever you visit epicgames.com and are asked to enter your 2FA code, you can either launch the Myki app and copy it manually, or you can install the Myki browser extension and have Myki auto-fill your password and 2FA for you.

Happy gaming!
